What we can take from 2020 | Happy New Year from P1 Technology

What we can take from 2020.

When I think back over the year, it seems like it never happened.

The last thing I can remember is flying to Sydney for a Microsoft conference in February, then to Adelaide to collect a car in mid-March. And then I woke up and it was November.

I’m sure there are many of you who can relate. The rest of the year feels like a really, really long dream, where I spent my time glued to a phone, TV or computer screen watching various stages of the pandemic unfurl around the country and the globe.

It’s horrible seeing the rest of the world still hurting so badly from exploding COVID-19 caseloads and deaths, and I can only be thankful once again to have been lucky enough to have been born in Australia. Where, despite the imperfection of our leaders and institutions, we still managed to come out of 2020 with a few wins on the board.

We learned that we can work from home and still be productive. We learned that our imperfect NBN is still a whole lot better than the old copper network was, and we thanked our lucky stars that COVID happened in 2020 and not 2017 when a good ADSL connection was about the best most businesses could rely on.

But most importantly we learned that life and business could operate at a reduced pace and we would still get by. We slowed down. And although we missed not being able to see our friends and families as much as we usually do for a few very, very long weeks, it was nice to experience a quieter world. A world where you didn’t have to be somewhere every day for 8 hours, a world where you didn’t have to go to the city just because that’s what we have always done for work.

Hopefully one of the things we’ll take out of 2020 and into 2021 is a readjusted work-life balance. Where we aren’t measured by the amount of hours we spend at work, but by the quality of the work that we do, and the quality of the relationships we have with real people, not just the number of LinkedIn connections we have.

So, here’s to 2020. Yes -  it wasn’t great. In fact it was stressful, tiring and even devastating for a lot of Australians and the rest of the world, but at least in Australia, we can hopefully take a few learnings from it and make 2021 and beyond a better balance of work, life and social engagements and maybe have a bit more time to smell the roses!

Hope you all had a great December and some time off in January and we look forward to seeing you again in 2021.

From me and the whole team @ P1 Technology.
